Poland Ready to Host Nuclear Weapons: President Duda's Declaration
President of Poland Andrzej Duda has declared that Poland is "prepared" to accommodate nuclear weapons on its territory should NATO opt to fortify its eastern flank.
"Russia is increasingly militarising the Königsberg region (Kaliningrad). Recently, it has moved its nuclear arsenal to Belarus. If our allies choose to deploy nuclear weapons as part of nuclear sharing on our soil to bolster NATO's eastern flank security, we are prepared for such an eventuality," stated Duda, as reported by Politico.
Since the onset of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, President Vladimir Putin has issued veiled nuclear threats against the West, even concealing atomic weaponry in Belarus, which shares borders with Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, all NATO members, as the source also mentions.
Duda remarked that nuclear sharing has been under discussion between Poland and the United States "for some time."
"We have already discussed this matter several times. I must acknowledge that when queried about it, I affirmed my readiness," he stated.
In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asserted that Russia "will take all necessary retaliatory measures to ensure our security," according to the state news service RIA Novosti.
