The Republic of Moldova calls for the support of the European community in the fight for democracy and progress. Igor Grosu's message
The Republic of Moldova relies on the support of the European community in the fight for democracy, modernization and progress. While in Spain at the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments, the Parliament Speaker from Chisinau, Igor Grosu, launched a call for ongoing support for our country and Ukraine.
Igor Grosu spoke about the risks and threats to national and economic security that persist in the Republic of Moldova in the context of Russia's war in Ukraine. "The Republic of Moldova is seriously affected by Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Russia's influence in Moldova has not only been reduced to the military presence in the east of the Republic of Moldova since 1992 through contingents of peacekeepers, but also the so-called command of Russian troops, economic blackmail through the dependence of the Republic of Moldova on Russian gas and the Russian market for agricultural production", declared Igor Grosu, listing all the actions undertaken by the Chisinau authorities for energy independence and economic development.
At the same time, the Parliament Speaker emphasized the dangers that persist in connection with the holding in the fall of the constitutional referendum on the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union.
There is a risk of large-scale disinformation and disinformation campaigns initiated by the Russian Federation to influence the results of the presidential elections and hijack the European path of the Republic of Moldova, said Grosu.
"However, we are sure that the Russian Federation will try by all means to hijack this process. Sophisticated modern techniques using AI and especially information channels are being used to mislead public opinion, to create panic and unrest among the population," added the Parliament Speaker.
The Parliament Speaker called on his counterparts in the EU to support the Republic of Moldova in the fight for democracy, noting that any aid given to Ukraine is also a valuable assistance to the Republic of Moldova.
"The support given to Ukraine also means support for the Republic of Moldova, because our countries have decided to break away from the former empire and live in a free, peaceful and prosperous world. It is our civilizational choice. I'm sure that together we will succeed, it won't be easy, but with a lot of intelligence, patience and perseverance we will ensure that our future and that of our children will be in peace and well-being", said Igor Grosu.
The Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments holds its work in the Spanish city of Palma.
The agenda of the forum is focused on two thematic sessions – foreign policy and defence.
The presidents of the EU parliaments, the leadership of the European Parliament and the presidents of the parliaments of the candidate countries participate in the event.
