Christ is Risen! Christians celebrate Easter today, customs and traditions

Orthodox Christians today celebrate Holy Easter - the feast of light and joy, considered the greatest feast of Christianity, which signifies the Resurrection of the Lord. The Easter holidays are held for three days.

According to tradition, on the night of the Resurrection, people went to the churches to consecrate the dishes and bring home the saint fire. According to the folklorist from the "Bogdan Petriceicu-Hasdeu" Institute of Romanian Philology, Mariana Cocieru, a cross is made above the door with the holy light and kept in houses for 3 days.

"After these dishes are consecrated, the housewives come home with the candle they used during the Resurrection service. It is said that the one who brings the light of the Resurrection to his home, his house will be protected from enemies, evil spirits and will have more well-being in the family where this light is brought", explained the folklorist.

Tradition says that on Easter morning, before tasting the food, Christians must eat consecrated food. Before sitting down to the festive table, believers wash one cheek with a red egg, and the other cheek with a white egg, so that they are strong and spiritually clean. They also wash with coins, so that they are full of money all year round.

On Easter, tradition says, no one should be sad, no one should cry, joy being the predominant feeling these days. Also, there is the tradition of wearing new clothes. The gesture symbolizes the renewal of body and soul.
