Republic of Moldova and Ukraine will start EU accession negotiations in the last week of June
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are to officially begin accession negotiations to the European Union at an intergovernmental conference planned in Brussels in the last week of June. Free Europe reports, citing diplomatic sources on condition of anonymity, that the event will take place before the rotating presidency of the EU is taken over by Hungary on July 1.
The start of the actual negotiations on the 30 accession chapters will most likely be left after the New Year. The government in Budapest loudly opposed to inviting Ukraine to start accession negotiations, but it always spoke in favor of the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union.
It's just that the two states are seen as a package, in this phase of the expansion, and any actions by Budapest to delay the European course of Kiev, may also affect Chisinau.
On an official visit to Budapest today, the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gerasimov mentioned that she had productive discussions with the Hungarian authorities about our country's European path.
