Russian forces launched a major missile and drone attack against Ukrainian energy infrastructure overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, injuring at least six people, according to Ukrainian authorities quoted by AFP and Agerpres.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Gherman Galushchenko, writing on Telegram, stated that the relentless enemy onslaught aims to cripple Ukraine's power supply. He added that this latest large-scale attack targeted electricity production and distribution facilities across several regions, including Poltava (eastern Ukraine), Kirovohrad (central Ukraine), Zaporizhia (southern Ukraine), Lviv (western Ukraine), Ivano-Frankivsk (western Ukraine), and Vinnytsia (western Ukraine).
Local authorities reported that at least six people were injured during the night-time assault. These injuries occurred in the Dnipropetrovsk region (south), the Kirovograd region (central), Brovary (near Kyiv), and Kyiv itself.
DTEK, the leading private investor in Ukraine's energy sector, confirmed that three thermal power plants sustained serious damage during the attack. The company added that its facilities have been bombarded approximately 180 times since the war began in February 2022, with five of those attacks occurring in the past six weeks.
The Kyiv city military administration reported that Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers launched several cruise missiles towards the capital, which was placed on high alert for three hours. The administration confirmed that all incoming missiles were successfully shot down.
