Moldovan Football: Petrocub Hîncești Clinch Historic Championship Title
Petrocub Hîncești have been crowned the new champions of Moldovan football, securing the title with one match remaining in the season.
Coach Andrei Martin's side needed a victory in their away fixture against Milsami Orhei but were only able to secure a 1-1 draw. However, Sheriff Tiraspol's defeat to Zimbru Chișinău by a score of 0-2 handed Petrocub the championship trophy.
In a social media post, Moldova's Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Andrei Spînu, congratulated FC Petrocub Hîncești, highlighting their achievement as the first team from the right bank of the Dniester River to win the championship since 2014. He also extended his best wishes to the team for their upcoming participation in European competitions.
With a single match remaining, Petrocub holds a commanding 21-point lead at the top of the table. Following their victory over Sheriff, Zimbru has climbed to second place with 17 points, but they are no longer able to catch Andrei Martin's team. Notably, Sheriff had dominated the Super League for the past eight seasons.
The final round of the Super League will be played on May 18th. Dacia-Buiucani will host Milsami, Sheriff will face CSF Bălți, and Petrocub will take on Zimbru.
