Macron Pledges Aid to Ukraine, Calls for Olympic Truce
French President Emmanuel Macron pledged additional military aid to his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, during a Tuesday phone call.
Macron also called for a ceasefire during the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris, potentially paving the way for negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow to end the war launched by Russia. This news comes according to Agerpres, citing Reuters.
In the conversation, France reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to providing Ukraine with all necessary long-term support, collaborating with its partners to ensure Russia's war of aggression fails. A statement from the French presidency did not disclose details regarding the upcoming military equipment deliveries from France to Ukraine. However, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu later clarified that a new shipment of Aster anti-aircraft missiles for the SAMP/T-MAMBA systems will be included in the provided aid.
The Elysee Palace further emphasised the importance of an "Olympic truce" during the Summer Olympics held in Paris between July 26 and August 11. The French presidency proposes that within the framework of such a truce, Russia cease its ongoing military operations to allow for any effective diplomatic initiatives aimed at starting negotiations that respect international law and Ukraine's legitimate interests.
The concept of an "Olympic truce" in all global conflicts during the Summer Olympics was initially proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping following their meeting in Paris on May 6.
