Stop Family Violence: Moldova Encourages Action
On International Family Day, Moldova launched the campaign "Your Family's Safety Matters! We Inform, Educate, Protect."
The campaign aims to raise awareness about domestic violence in society, encourage victims to report abuse, and build trust in law enforcement.
From May 15 to June 15, law enforcement officers will visit schools throughout the country to educate students about the dangers of domestic violence. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat domestic violence in Moldova.
A cooperation agreement was signed at the launch event between the General Inspectorate of Police and the National Agency for Violence Prevention. This agreement strengthens their partnership to further reduce domestic violence and improve public safety.
"The campaign strives to create a well-informed and educated society free from violence," said Viorel Cernăuțeanu, head of the General Inspectorate of Police. He added that the Family Justice Center, established within the Inspectorate, provides support to victims of domestic violence.
Over 15,000 domestic violence cases were reported between 2020 and 2023, many with serious consequences. The campaign encourages widespread reporting from the public and aims to educate both aggressors and all citizens about the issue.
Viorica Țîmbalari, Director of the National Agency for Violence Prevention, stressed the importance of safety and well-being for all families in Moldova. "Families are the foundation for learning values, social norms, and life skills," she said. "Ensuring the safety and well-being of every family must be a priority."
The campaign was launched in partnership with various development partners, including UN Women Moldova, the International Center "La Strada," and the International Organization for Migration in Moldova, as well as the U.S. Embassy in Moldova etc..
