President Maia Sandu's Diplomatic Mission: Strengthening Moldova-Germany Ties
President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova is slated to visit Germany on May 17-18.
Her itinerary includes meetings with key German leaders: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Bundestag President Bärbel Bas. During this official visit, President Sandu is anticipated to receive an award worth €25,000, acknowledging her unwavering commitment to democratic values, as announced by the Presidency. The funds from this award, according to official sources, will be donated.
This visit underscores the continued commitment of both Moldova and Germany to strengthen bilateral relations amid Moldova's accession process to the European Union. President Sandu is expected to address various topics during her visit, including Germany's support for Moldova's economy amidst the conflict in Ukraine, the EU accession process, and cooperation for regional stability, as stated in a press release issued by the presidential institution on May 16.
In addition to her engagements in Berlin, President Sandu will travel to Leipzig to attend the award ceremony for the "Robert Blum for Democracy 2024" award, under the patronage of President Steinmeier.
Furthermore, during her visit to Germany, President Sandu will meet with Moldovan communities in Berlin and Frankfurt on Main.
Germany, as one of the founding countries of the European Union, plays a pivotal role in Moldova's modernization and European integration efforts. Following the outbreak of conflict in the region in March 2022, Germany, alongside France and Romania, launched the Support Platform for Moldova. This initiative garnered substantial support, facilitating the effective management of the influx of Ukrainian refugees, enhancing energy security, and promoting economic and social reforms in Moldova.
Germany is also a crucial economic partner for Moldova, with numerous companies operating within its borders or sourcing locally made components. Strengthening commercial and economic relations is one of the primary objectives of this visit.
