President Maia Sandu received an award for democracy, which she will donate
On a working visit to Germany, today, in Leipzig, President Maia Sandu received the "Robert Blum for Democracy 2024" award, offered under the patronage of the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The award is accompanied by 25,000 euros, an amount that Maia Sandu will donate.
"This award is not only a recognition of my efforts, but also a proof of the resilience and determination of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova on the path to democracy," said Maia Sandu, according to a press release from the Presidency.
President Steinmeier, after yesterday's meeting with the Head of State in Berlin, said: “In times when war has returned to Europe and when liberal democracy must assert itself internally and externally, lead the country with confidence and courage. May this award give you strength to continue your commitment to a democratic and European Moldova".
The "Robert Blum for Democracy" award is given every two years to personalities who have distinguished themselves in the promotion of human rights and democracy.
Robert Blum was a 19th century German politician who fought for German unification, justice and freedom.
President Maia Sandu is on a working visit to Germany, on May 17-18, where she had meetings with German officials, including President Steinmeier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas. Also, on Friday she met with the Moldovan community in Berlin and is going to talk today with compatriots from Frankfurt am Main.
