Germany Boosts Military Aid to Ukraine with Tanks & Drones
Germany delivered 10 Leopard 1 A5 tanks, ammunition for Leopard 2 tanks, thousands of rounds of ammunition, 54 reconnaissance drones, and other supplies to Ukraine in its latest military aid shipment, according to a May 22nd statement by the German government, reported by The Kyiv Independent.
The shipment also included four demining vehicles, 1.8 million rounds of ammunition for small arms, a Dachs engineering armoured vehicle, a Beaver bridge-laying vehicle with spare parts, and a Bergepanzer 2 armoured recovery vehicle with spare parts.
Ukraine additionally received 16 Zetros armoured vehicles, rifles, assault knives, LED lights, and two mine ploughs.
The 10 Leopard 1 A5 tanks were delivered as part of a collaborative project with Denmark.
Initially hesitant to contribute military aid, Germany has become the second-largest military donor to Ukraine after the United States. However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains reluctant to provide Ukraine with key capabilities, such as Taurus long-range missiles.
Germany plans to increase its military aid to Ukraine by an additional 3.8 billion euros ($4.13 billion) in 2024, according to a Reuters report from May 21.
