Blinken Supports Moldova's EU Bid, Meets Czech Officials

Secretary Antony Blinken will travel to Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, and Prague, Czech Republic, from May 28-31, announced the Department of State in Washington.

In Chișinău, Blinken will meet with Moldovan President Maia Sandu and other high-ranking officials to reaffirm the USA's support for Moldova's progress regarding EU membership and energy security.

In Prague, he will meet with Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský and other high-ranking officials to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine, defence modernization in collaboration, and strengthening energy ties. While in Prague, the American Secretary of State will participate in an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers to discuss priorities for the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington.

This will be the second visit of the head of American diplomacy to Chișinău since March 2022. During that visit, the American official was in Chișinău for two days. Blinken met with President Maia Sandu, former Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, and former Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the USA has increased financial support for the Republic of Moldova and sanctioned Moldovan oligarchs who were planning to destabilise the country.
