The announcement was made by James O’Brien, his assistant for European and Eurasian Affairs, during a briefing. Blinken is poised to unveil a substantial support package for the Republic of Moldova's transition, focusing on both energy independence and countering Russian threats.

"On Wednesday, he will arrive in Chișinău, Republic of Moldova. Subsequently, that evening and throughout Thursday, he will be in Prague, Czech Republic," stated James O’Brien. "During these meetings in the Republic of Moldova, he will meet with President Maia Sandu, the Prime Minister, and other officials."

This marks the second visit of the American diplomatic chief to Chișinău, following his previous visit in March 2022. Blinken had met with President Maia Sandu, former Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, and former Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu during his prior visit.

Following the commencement of the war in Ukraine, the US heightened its financial support for the Republic of Moldova and imposed sanctions on Moldovan oligarchs suspected of plotting to destabilise the country.
