Unlocking Opportunities: Moldovan Citizens' Perspective on EU Membership

The benefits of European Union membership can be comprehensively examined through the perspective of citizens of the Republic of Moldova, particularly those with dual citizenship who are employed in Europe.

According to former Romanian President Traian Băsescu, this approach holds potential to sway undecided Moldovans. Additionally, individuals nostalgic for the Soviet Union and the "Russian world" are encouraged to observe the developments in eastern Ukraine, where entire communities are being devastated by bombardments from the Russian Federation.

Băsescu emphasised the significance of the European option, stating, "For those who are observing and awaiting closer ties to Russia, I recommend they direct their attention to eastern Ukraine. There, they can witness the destruction caused by bombs, leaving people homeless and children orphaned. This portrays the current reality of Russia's presence in the region." He further highlighted the competitive nature of the EU market, noting that despite the accompanying challenges, it offers the prospect of constructing one's future independently amidst peace.

Expressing hope that the majority of citizens of the Republic of Moldova are not under Russian control, Băsescu asserted that individuals should be free to react according to their own desires. He underscored the importance of examining the experiences of nearly one million Moldovan citizens working in Europe to gauge the outcomes of EU membership.

Furthermore, Băsescu referenced the European Parliament, where several young people from the Republic of Moldova are employed, indicating opportunities for engagement and observation.

In conclusion, Băsescu urged individuals to consider the firsthand experiences of Moldovan citizens working within the European Union as a means to better understand the potential benefits and implications of EU membership.
