Socialists contested the method of indexation of pensions for the year 2023 at the Constitutional Court. PAS reaction

Today, January 23, the Socialists submitted a referral to the Constitutional Court contesting the method of indexing pensions for the year 2023. They accuse the government of not indexing pensions to the current level of inflation. On the other hand, PAS representatives suggest that they check the constitutionality of their decision, from 2021, by which they indexed pensions for the elderly by 1 percent.

According to the socialists, the Government's decision to index pensions by 14.4 percent, and not by 33.8 percent, as much as the inflation rate was at the end of last year, is "unfair". Therefore, they request the indexation of the pension to the inflation rate.

"This is the first time since the law came into force that the state does not index pensions to the full level of inflation. No government has ever allowed itself to do this," said BCS MP Vladimir Odnostalco.

The socialist Maxim Lebedinschi is of the same opinion that, in the current situation of economic crisis, pensioners, being one of the most vulnerable categories of the population, should be supported by the Government.

"We want to restore social equity and those constitutional guarantees to be respected for each of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of the social category from which they come. We hope that the Court will follow up on this referral", said Maxim Lebedinschi, PSRM member.

Contacted by Moldova 1, the spokeswoman of the Action and Solidarity Party, Adriana Vlas, mentioned that the socialists must verify the constitutionality of their decision from 2021, by which pensions were indexed by only 1 percent. Vlas specified that, in 2023, according to the latest amendment, pensions will be indexed, taking into account the increase in income to the social security budget. At the same time, she recalled that, in the last 18 months, the minimum pension increased from 1,188 lei to 2,278 lei and will exceed 2,400 lei, starting from April 1.

Previously, the Minister of Finance declared that, due to a lack of funds, in April 2023, pensions will be indexed by a little over 14 percent.
