Traian Băsescu could restore his citizenship of the Republic of Moldova
Members and sympathizers of the People's Movement Party of the Republic of Moldova (PMP) signed a petition addressed to Maia Sandu for restoring Traian Băsescu's Moldovan citizenship. The chief of staff of President Sandu, Adrian Bălutel, told Moldova 1 TV that an official request to the presidential administration is necessary. Traian Băsescu obtained the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by the decree of the Moldovan president Nicolae Timofti, in 2016, but, a year later, it was withdrawn from him by Igor Dodon, who had won the presidential elections.
In an appeal published on social networks, PMP appreciates the role that President Traian Băsescu played in the regaining of Romanian citizenship for the descendants of Bessarabians born in interwar Romania and the non-refundable funding offered by the Bucharest government. For these merits, Traian Băsescu should be restored the Moldovan citizenship that Igor Dodon withdrew from him, say PMP members and sympathizers. Also, they conveyed that they support the pro-accession referendum.
The chief of staff at the presidential administration, Adrian Băluțel, said that there is no official request, and for restoring it, Traian Băsescu would need to ask President Maia Sandu for this.
Traian Băsescu contested the withdrawal of citizenship, decided by Igor Dodon, because it would have been an arbitrary decision contrary to the constitution. However, in 2018, the Chisinau District Court and the Court of Appeal rejected the request of the lawyers of the former Romanian president. However, Traian Băsescu's wife, Maria, still holds Moldovan citizenship.
Traian Băsescu was president of Romania from 2004 to 2014 and was elected to the European Parliament in 2019. The mandate expires in June when the European elections take place, but former president Băsescu has announced that he is not running.
