The European Commission will inform the member states that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are ready for official accession negotiations
The European Commission will inform the member states today that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have met the conditions to start official accession negotiations, according to the correspondent of Radio Moldova in Brussels, Dan Alexe. However, the final decision, regarding the inclusion of the recommendation to start negotiations in the official statement, will be taken next Wednesday by the ambassadors of the EU member states. Later, at the June 27-28 summit, the leaders of the community block will officially decide on the accession negotiations.
Member states are rushing to support the two states' desire to officially open accession negotiations before July 1, when Hungary will take over the presidency of the EU Council. It is estimated that Budapest could treat this issue with indifference.
The progress of negotiations for the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU is supported by 12 European countries, including Germany, Slovakia, Sweden and Finland. An initiative in this sense was launched by the Minister of European Affairs, Martin Dvořák, through a letter addressed to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine could officially start the accession negotiations to the European Union at an intergovernmental conference scheduled to take place in Brussels in the last week of June.
The official negotiations for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union depend on the speed with which our country will fulfill its tasks. "There is full openness on the part of the European countries to act quickly in the opening of negotiations", said the chief negotiator of the Republic of Moldova for the accession process, Cristina Gherasimov, from Brussels. On March 4, 2022, the Republic of Moldova submitted its application for accession to the European Union, simultaneously with Ukraine and Georgia.
The decision was taken in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, our neighbor. "It is a first step towards achieving the fundamental objective of European integration", said the president Maia Sandu at the time.
