Free Event: Honoring Eminescu in Chisinau

The Mihai Eminescu Romanian Cultural Institute in Chișinău, partnering with the Writers' Union of Moldova and its Chisinau chapter, is organising a series of commemorative events on June 15, 2024, to mark the 135th anniversary of the passing of the national poet Mihai Eminescu.

The commemoration will commence with the laying of flowers at the bust of the poet Mihai Eminescu in the "Ştefan cel Mare şi Sfânt" Public Garden. This gesture honours his memory and enduring contributions to Romanian literature.

The ceremony will then continue at the Writers' House, located on Grigore Ureche Street (formerly 31 August 1989 Street), with a further laying of flowers at the poet's monument. This will be followed by a poetry recital performed by members of the Writers' Union of Moldova and the Chisinau chapter, offering a moment of reflection on Eminescu's life and work.

A panel discussion moderated by Teo Chiriac, president of both the Writers' Union of Moldova and its Chisinau chapter, will take place in the Mirror Hall of the Writers' House. The discussion will explore the continued relevance and impact of Eminescu's journalism in the contemporary context, delving into essential aspects of his thought and writings.

Theatre, choreography, and multimedia arts students from the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts will contribute to the commemoration by reading excerpts from Eminescu's journalism. This inclusion brings the young voice of Romanian literature to the fore.

These events serve to honour the poet Mihai Eminescu and reaffirm his enduring importance in Romanian culture and literature. The commemoration also provides a platform for reflection and conversation on his lasting literary heritage. Open to the public, the event is expected to draw a large audience of culture and literature enthusiasts, promising to be a moving and thought-provoking experience.
