Moldova Exam Scandal: Leaks & Cheating Under Investigation
Serious irregularities marred the middle school graduation exams in eight educational institutions across five districts of Moldova.
Leaked exam tests and their solutions circulated in violation of regulations, even during the exams themselves. Additionally, in 13 schools across three districts, significant discrepancies were found between the initial scores and those awarded after the re-evaluation of the exams by the National Re-evaluation Commission.
The Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) has announced that the National Exam Commission (CNE) has launched official investigations into these cases. The CNE has prioritised investigations by the Education Directorates in Causeni, Criuleni, Edinet, Glodeni, and Floresti districts to examine the full extent of the irregularities discovered. These Directorates must submit a prompt report on their findings and any resulting actions.
The Ministry has also forwarded all related materials to the General Inspectorate of Police for a full investigation into these potential violations of exam procedures.
According to Moldova's Contraventional Code, such offences can result in fines of up to 4,500 lei for individuals and up to 12,000 lei for legal entities. Furthermore, individuals holding managerial positions may face additional penalties, including being barred from holding certain positions for up to one year.
