Foreigners married for 10 years to citizens of Romania to get Romanian citizenship. The Bucharest authorities amend the Citizenship Law
Romanian citizenship may be granted, upon request, to a foreign person who is married and has been living abroad with a Romanian citizen for at least ten years, writes Agerpres. The Senate from Bucharest adopted and amended, on Tuesday, in plenary, as the first Chamber notified, a project to supplement the Citizenship Law. The amendment was proposed by the PSD senator Robert Cazanciuc, adopted by the Legal Commission and appropriated by the plenary session of the Bucharest Senate.
He mentioned that the current legislation stipulates that in order to grant citizenship to a foreign citizen married to a Romanian, they must live in Romania for at least five years, which, in the senator's opinion, constitutes "a barrier" and he is confident that "the barrier to be overcome" by this draft law, reports the quoted source.
The normative act also provides for necessary measures for the acquisition of Romanian citizenship and rules to prevent its fraudulent acquisition. Thus, biometric checks are provided for persons applying for the granting of Romanian citizenship.
The draft law for the amendment and completion of the Romanian Citizenship Law 21/1991, as well as for the amendment and completion of other normative acts, is to be debated in the Chamber of Deputies, which has a decision-making role.
