Volodymyr Zelensky: Ukraine needs tanks, not promises

Ukraine urgently needs tanks, not promises, says Volodymyr Zelensky. In his message last night, he reproaches the allies for thinking too much about whether or not to send weapons and heavy combat equipment to his country. The message came at the end of a day in which German media reported that Olaf Scholz had decided to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other countries to do so. CNN claims that the subject will be debated today in Parliament. At the same time, the American media writes that the USA would approve the delivery of 30 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. Meanwhile, President Zelenskiy warns of a new Russian attack in the Donbass region.

Washington plans to send several dozen M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv. Several overseas media outlets are writing about it, citing American officials. It is assumed that the parallel shipment of American and German tanks was one of the conditions for Germany to agree to supply the Ukrainian armed forces with Leopard 2 tanks. At the same time, the White House and the Pentagon have so far remained silent.

"I have nothing to announce today regarding the M1. As we have said before, we are continuing a very active dialogue with Ukraine, with our allies and international partners to focus on their immediate needs. But we will also continue to discuss what they might need in the medium and long term," said Pentagon spokesman General Patrick Ryder.

According to the German publication Der Spiegel, Berlin has decided and given the green light for supplying Kiev with Leopard tanks. These are at least 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks from the stocks of the Bundeswehr. At the same time, as expected, Germany intends to give permission for the export of such equipment from other countries, especially from Poland. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes there should be more such deliveries, as the allies have the number of tanks Kiev needs.

"It is important to see the reality. It is not about five, 10 or 15 tanks. The needs are much greater. Every day we do whatever it takes to cover the shortfall. And thank you to everyone who supports us in this. However, discussions must end with decisions. Decisions that would really strengthen our defense against terrorists," the Ukrainian leader emphasized.

On the other hand, the Kremlin says that the tanks delivered to Ukraine will be destroyed and will not change anything in terms of achieving Moscow's goals. A US delivery of tanks to Ukraine would be "another blatant provocation" against Russia, said Anatoli Antonov, Russia's ambassador to Washington. And former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says that his country has enough weapons to fight in Ukraine.
