Moldova Accepts EU Negotiation Framework at Key Conference
The Moldovan delegation attending the inaugural Republic of Moldova-European Union Intergovernmental Conference departs for Luxembourg today.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean will lead the delegation, which will include several ministers with relevant areas of expertise, such as Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popșoi, Economic Development and Digitalization Minister Dumitru Alaiba, and Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vladimir Bolea.
During the Conference, Prime Minister Recean will present Moldova's negotiating position, which confirms the country's acceptance of the European Union's proposed negotiating framework.
The 27 member states of the European Union confirmed the launch of accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine on Tuesday, June 25th.
Moldova submitted an application for EU membership on March 3, 2022. The European Commission issued its opinion on the application less than a year later.
On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Moldova candidate status. Following Moldova's fulfilment of the European Commission's recommendations, EU leaders decided to open accession negotiations with Moldova in December of last year. They also invited the Council to adopt the negotiating framework after completing the relevant steps outlined in the Commission report.
EU leaders paved the way for accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova in mid-December 2023.
