Interpol to Audit Moldova Bureau Amid Corruption Scandal
Experts from Interpol's Central Bureau in Lyon will conduct an audit at the Interpol Bureau in the Republic of Moldova.
The statement was made by the President of Parliament, Igor Grosu. He specified that the checks are in the context of the corruption scandal involving several employees of the institution.
"I know that an audit was requested from the headquarters in Lyon to come and conduct an audit at the Interpol subdivision in the Republic of Moldova. I do not know if they will be exactly French experts, but I know they are from headquarters. It is better for the Ministry of Internal Affairs to answer; they know the details," declared Igor Grosu.
At the beginning of June, the head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Veronica Dragalin, announced a supposed scheme in which a group of people, including public officials, were receiving bribes of millions of dollars to erase "red notices" issued by Interpol, which signals criminals wanted internationally.
Over 30 searches were conducted, and six people were detained, including the head of Interpol Moldova, Viorel Țentiu. He, along with another accused whose identity has not yet been made public, was placed in preventive custody. The other four individuals were released. Following this scandal, seven employees of the Interpol Bureau in the Republic of Moldova were suspended from their positions during the internal investigation.
