Moldova's 1st Film with US Tackles Corruption

A new film, "Ștampila" (The Stamp), premieres today, marking the first ever co-production between Moldova and the United States.

The dramatic comedy tells the story of a determined woman who aspires to launch a business in her home country, Moldova. However, her dream is met with the harsh realities of bureaucracy and corruption.

Shot in December 2018 across 40 locations throughout Moldova, the film boasts a cast of over 100 actors from both Moldova and Romania. The title, "Ștampila," reflects the protagonist's personal experience of navigating a labyrinth of institutions to obtain a single stamp, a symbolic representation of the bureaucratic hurdles she encounters.

The film's creation is a testament to international collaboration. American producer Neil Irwin, inspired by the story of Mariana Irwin (the film's real-life inspiration), shared it with young director David Larson. Together, they embarked on a journey to bring this story to life as a dramatic comedy.

Despite the language barrier, director David Larson meticulously guided the cast, ensuring clear communication through the use of translators when needed. Actress Alina Țurcanu commends the director's meticulous approach and the open communication that fostered a collaborative filming process.

"The film is about striving to make a difference," says actor Ronin Terenti. "It highlights the power of women who unite, standing strong against these greedy, power-hungry men." The film delves into themes of social justice and female empowerment, offering a powerful message of resilience in the face of adversity.

Though completed in 2018, the film's release was delayed due to the pandemic and other challenges. Finally, audiences can experience this poignant story on the big screen starting today.
