Switzerland secured the first goal in the 37th minute. Remo Freuler, well-positioned in the penalty area following a pass from Ruben Vargas, slotted the ball into the near corner. To some extent, Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Italian goalkeeper, was hindered by Gianluca Mancini's unfortunate deflection. Shortly before the first half ended, Switzerland nearly doubled their lead. Fabian Rieder's direct free kick aimed for the near corner was saved by the Italian goalkeeper, but the ball caromed off the left post before being cleared.

At the very beginning of the second half, Switzerland further extended their lead with a well-executed shot from the edge of the box by Vargas. Donnarumma was unable to react in time to prevent the goal. In the 52nd minute, Switzerland came close to scoring again when Fabian Schar's deflection struck the bar. Italy had their own chance in the 75th minute, but Gianluca Scamacca's promising shot found the woodwork of Yann Sommer's goal.

Switzerland will now face the winner of the England-Slovakia match in the quarter-finals.
