Moldovan Wine Celebrates EU Entry with Limited Edition

A well-known Moldovan winery was inspired by the official launch of European Union (EU) accession negotiations to create a unique wine.

This special blend, crafted using both European and Moldovan grape varieties, will be a limited edition of only 1,604 bottles.

The winery plans to release this commemorative collection on the very day Moldova officially joins the European Union.

The wine itself is a dry blend. It incorporates Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, both well-regarded French grape varieties, alongside Fetească Neagră, a native Moldovan grape. This unique combination symbolises the coming together of Moldova and the European Union.

The grapes for this special blend were harvested in 2020. Notably, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged in French barrels, further emphasising the European influence on this celebratory wine.

The winery is still finalising the design for the bottle's label. However, they have confirmed that it will undoubtedly commemorate the historic moment of Moldova joining the European Union.

Moldovan wine was among the first products from the country to gain a foothold in the Western market. This shift in focus came about after a series of Russian embargoes imposed in 2006, 2010, and 2013, which remain in effect today. In 2022, Moldovan wine exports to EU countries reached nearly 55 million dollars. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics indicates that this figure grew even stronger in 2023, with Moldovan wine exports to the European Union exceeding 60 billion dollars.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the majority (45%) of Moldovan wine exports are directed towards the European Union. An additional 26% goes to CIS countries, while the remaining 29% is exported to other countries around the world. The top three destinations for Moldovan wine within the EU are Romania, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
