Ex-prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianoglo, the candidate of the socialists for the presidency
Former general prosecutor Alexandr Stoianoglo is the candidate of the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) for the position of president of the Republic of Moldova. The announcement was made by the leader of the Socialists, Igor Dodon, during a briefing. Dodon called on the opposition parties to support Stoianoglo in the presidential elections. Political commentator Victor Ciobanu told "Teleradio-Moldova" that Stoianoglo's nomination to the autumn elections "is a smart step".
"Alexandr Stoianoglo possesses both professional authority, and modesty, and civic courage, and principles - all qualities for a president of a country", declared Igor Dodon.
The Socialists called on the opposition parties to support Stoianoglo in the presidential race. "The time has come to show political maturity, all together," said Dodon. The former general prosecutor said he decided to accept the PSRM proposal because of " injustice and abuse" in the country.
"Now there is no place for pride and ambition, there is only responsibility," Stoianoglo said.
Commentator: Stoianoglo's presidential bid, a smart move
Political commentator Victor Ciobanu claims that Stoianoglo's advance is a smart step since the left could not have been unified under Dodon's leadership.
"Move, I would say, relatively intelligent on the part of the socialists who anyway continue the attempts to create the possibility of the advancement of a single candidate. They, at least Dodon, all the time spoke in these terms and normally the left could not come together under Dodon's candidacy, but now it is a kind of neutral candidacy and the socialists will try to gel the votes of the other candidates who might possibly appear on the left flank", explained political commentator Victor Ciobanu.
We remind you that Alexandr Stoianoglo, appointed to the position of general prosecutor in November 2019, was detained two years later, being investigated in several files, and subsequently suspended from his position.
