A team of rescuers from the Republic of Moldova is going to Greece to help put out the fires
A team of rescuers from the Republic of Moldova leaves for Greece. They are going to help extinguish forest fires in the Nea Makri region.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), in this context, today, July 13, at 8:00 p.m., in the premises of the Regional Search and Rescue Directorate No. 1 in the municipality of Chisinau, a detachment ceremony of the IGSU staff will take place.
From July to September, about 240 firefighters from countries such as the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, Malta and Romania will supplement the staff for extinguishing the fires in Greece.
Dozens of fires broke out in Greece last weekend, including two near the capital Athens. On Tuesday, emergency crews, assisted by firefighting aircraft, battled flames on several islands, including Kos, Chios and Crete. To bring wildfires under control quickly, Greece is increasingly using drones to monitor forest regions.
In 2023, forest fires killed 20 people in northern Greece and led to the evacuation of 19,000 people from the island of Rhodes.
