Moldova Boosts Defence Spending, Eyes Education Reform

Moldova's national defence budget is set to gradually increase, aiming to reach a specific percentage of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030.

This measure is outlined in the National Strategy 2024-2034, which is scheduled for government approval today.

National Security Strategy Identifies Potential Threats

The strategy also identifies potential threats and risks to national defence. These include the establishment of a land-based military corridor by the Russian Federation towards Moldova's borders, the Kremlin's ongoing hybrid warfare tactics, and the continued presence of illegal Russian military forces on Moldovan territory.

US and Romanian Experts Approve National Defense Strategy

The draft National Strategy underwent consultation with and review by defence experts from the United States and Romania before receiving their approval.

Government Considers Incentive Program to Improve Education

The Cabinet of Ministers will also consider a draft resolution aimed at incentivizing parents to provide their children with a better education. The proposal involves offering a financial incentive for transferring children to larger schools.

Financial Support for Students Attending Small Schools

Under the draft resolution, parents whose children attend schools with fewer than 50 students can choose to transfer them to a larger institution from September 1st onwards. These parents will be eligible for a monthly allowance of 1,000 lei to help cover transportation costs associated with attending a school outside their local area.

Initial Funding Allocated for Program Launch

The budget allocates 3 million lei for the first semester of the 2024 academic year to support this program. There are over 100 schools in Moldova with fewer than 50 students and over 300 schools with fewer than 100 students.
