Petru Rotaru Resigns as Finance Minister, Moves to National Bank

The decision to resign from the position of Minister of Finance is a personal one. Petru Rotaru made this announcement to Teleradio Moldova.

He will continue his service in the public sector at the National Bank of Moldova. His candidacy for a new position has been submitted for approval to Parliament and is expected to be confirmed next week.

Simultaneously, the official mentioned that discussions are currently underway at the political level regarding potential candidates for the leadership of the Ministry of Finance.

"This is the same field of work and a challenge that both honours and obliges me. The decision will be approved next week in Parliament. I do not yet know who the new minister will be; discussions are ongoing. This matter is purely political and is being deliberated with the relevant political bodies. The Prime Minister will announce the decision, as it falls within his prerogative," stated Petru Rotaru.

The Minister of Finance, Petru Rotaru, announced the end of his term, expressing gratitude to colleagues and partners for their support throughout his tenure.

In his message, the official thanked Prime Minister Dorin Recean for his crucial collaboration in achieving government objectives and acknowledged his nomination by Governor Anca Dragu for the position of Vice-Governor of the National Bank of Moldova. According to Rotaru, "This is a significant honour and responsibility that I will assume with seriousness."

Rotaru stated that until he receives a vote of confidence from Parliament, he will continue to carry out his duties as minister with dedication and professionalism. He extended special thanks to colleagues at the Ministry of Finance, business partners, development partners, central and local authorities, and civil society, recognizing that each intervention, piece of advice, or critique has contributed to improving the ministry's operations.

Petru Rotaru has served as Minister of Finance since 2023 and has extensive experience in the financial sector. He graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova in 2007, specialising in finance and accounting, and earned a master’s degree in law from the same institution between 2010 and 2012.

His professional career includes roles in both the financial sector and public administration. From 2016 to 2023, he was a member of the Court of Accounts of the Republic of Moldova, and he subsequently assumed the leadership of the State Tax Service.
