Moldova Faces Severe Drought: Record High Temperatures Blamed
The State Hydrometeorological Service of Moldova issued a report indicating a severe drought in the Republic of Moldova.
Between July 1st and 20th, the soil moisture coefficient reached a critically low level of 0.4.
In a press release, the agency attributed the drought to several factors. These include very high temperatures, significant precipitation deficits, and low soil moisture reserves.
Meteorologists recorded average air temperatures ranging from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius during this period. This represents an increase of up to 6.3 degrees above the historical norm for this time of year – the highest ever recorded in Moldova.
Record-breaking temperatures also occurred on July 16th and 17th. Many areas of the country experienced highs of 40.9 degrees Celsius. This temperature has only been recorded twice before, in 2007 and 2012.
