Moldova Boosts Transnistria Ties: Citizenship on the Rise

The number of residents in Transnistria holding Moldovan citizenship has significantly increased in recent years.

According to the Bureau of Reintegration, of the nearly 370,000 people living in the region, over 360,000 possess Moldovan citizenship.

This figure represents a growth of over 8% compared to 2020. The increase is attributed to a larger number of Transnistrian residents obtaining passports or identity cards issued by the Moldovan government. By the end of June this year, approximately 340,000 individuals were able to travel to other countries using Moldovan passports, indicating a ten percent rise in passport holders.

Furthermore, there has been an increase in the issuance of identity cards. This trend is a result of legislative amendments that have simplified the citizenship acquisition process. Over the past six years, more than 39,000 people have become Moldovan citizens, with 67% of them residing in Transnistria.
