Members of the European Parliament request the European Commission to suspend Hungary's participation in the Schengen area
Deputies of the European Parliament requested the European Commission to suspend Hungary's participation in the Schengen zone, due to the refusal to tighten the visa regime for Russian citizens, writes Unian.
The demand addressed to the European Commission was signed by a group of MEPs who believe that the relaxation of visa measures by Hungary towards Russia and Belarus could give the "green light" to Russian spies and to facilitate their entry into the countries of the European Union.
The letter had around 70 signatures, including from former prime ministers of Belgium and Ireland.
We remind you that at the end of July, Hungary caused the displeasure of the EU with new initiatives. For more than a week, Russians have been able to freely enter the EU through Hungary, without any checks, and move on to other EU countries. This became possible thanks to registration in Hungary as migrant workers, which Prime Minister Viktor Orban extended to citizens of Russia and Belarus in July.
Journalists point out that there is now great concern that Russian spies may also be infiltrating the EU and the Kremlin may be intent on secretly bringing Russians into the EU to commit terrorist acts.
