The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine will sign an agreement for the Espoo Convention implementation
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are preparing to sign an important agreement that will mark the start of negotiations for the implementation of the Espoo Convention, which focuses on environmental impact assessment in a transboundary context. A draft law in this regard was voted at the Government meeting on August 7.
The Espoo Convention, to which the Republic of Moldova joined in 1993, stipulates the early assessment of the impact on the environment of planned activities to prevent and to reduce negative effects.
Through this Agreement, the two countries will collaborate more effectively, notifying each other of activities that could influence the environment in the other country and participating in joint environmental assessment procedures.
The Environment Minister emphasized that this agreement will strengthen good neighbourly relations and will contribute to protecting the environment of both nations.
After signing the agreement in Kyiv, a Joint Commission for Environmental Impact Assessment will be created, which will facilitate assessment, will increase public access to information and will help find solutions to reduce environmental impact.
