This will mark the first permanent deployment of the German army since World War II, according to a report from Reuters..

Germany committed last year to deploying troops in Lithuania, an EU and NATO member state that borders Russia. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius compared this decision to the deployment of allied forces in West Germany during the Cold War, aimed at defending Western Europe in the event of a Soviet attack.

The Lithuanian Chief of Staff estimated that the country will spend over one billion euros in the next three years on constructing the base, which is one of the largest construction projects in Lithuania's history.
