German chancellor visits Moldova amid EU and security talks
German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is making a working visit to the Republic of Moldova today, August 21.
This marks his second visit to Moldova in the past two years and the first bilateral visit by a German chancellor in 12 years.
Chancellor Scholz, who is on an official visit to Chișinău, was welcomed by President Maia Sandu at the Presidential Palace. The two officials will hold a joint press conference at 6:10 PM.
Political analysts view the German chancellor’s visit as a positive sign for the authorities in Chișinău. Berlin's focus on Moldova’s reform efforts is significant, according to Laurențiu Pleșca, an expert on Radio Moldova’s program "Zi de Zi" (Day by Day). “A German chancellor, equivalent to a prime minister, has not visited us in 12 years. This visit highlights the excellent relations between Moldova and Germany. We have observed a strengthening of ties between Berlin and Chișinău, particularly in light of the war in Ukraine. The ongoing support from European countries, notably Germany and France, underscores their pivotal role in the EU.”
Meanwhile, political analyst Nicolae Negru compared Chancellor Scholz’s visit to that of former Chancellor Angela Merkel, noting that geopolitical shifts have altered priorities in the region. “There is now an opportunity to re-establish relations between Moldova and Germany on an equal footing, which could help address our challenges.”
Chancellor Scholz, who is on an official visit to Chișinău, was greeted with military honours by Prime Minister Dorin Recean at the Government building.
The discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations and security issues. Topics will also include the impact of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine on Moldova. Additionally, the talks will likely cover Moldova’s EU accession and Germany’s support for this process, notes the Federal Government of Germany.
Radio Moldova and Moldova 1 will broadcast the statements of both officials live.
Germany is a key partner for Moldova, having provided financial support for various projects and backing the country's European integration, stated Adrian Băluțel, head of the Cabinet of the President of Moldova, on Radio Moldova.
“In the past four years, the number of projects supported by Germany has increased significantly, including social, reconstruction, and infrastructure projects. Politically, we have established more connections. Our institutions are communicating effectively, which greatly facilitates the support we receive from Germany. Germany will remain a key partner in supporting our economic development efforts. The number of German investors has increased in recent years, which is encouraging,” said Adrian Băluțel.
In light of the German Federal Chancellor’s visit, access to certain public places in the capital will be temporarily restricted from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Additionally, mass gatherings, road repairs, and work on electrical and thermal networks will be restricted along the route of the official convoy.
It is worth noting that Olaf Scholz hosted President Maia Sandu in Berlin in May. At that time, the German official remarked at a press conference that “there is still great potential for expanding economic relations between Germany and Moldova.”
Olaf Scholz also visited Moldova on June 1, 2023, to attend the European Political Community Summit in Bulboaca. During the summit, Scholz emphasised that the event represents a commitment to Moldova’s EU membership and serves as a strong signal against Russian imperialism, promoting constructive cooperation in Europe.
