Kiev ratified Rome Statute; ICC prosecutes war crimes in Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada in Kiev has voted to ratify the Rome Statute, the document foundational to the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to news agencies citing posts by Ukrainian parliamentarians.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is mandated to prosecute individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression, and genocide.
Although ICC prosecutors have been investigating the situation in Ukraine since the early weeks of the large-scale Russian invasion and have issued arrest warrants for several Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, Kiev has so far cooperated with the Hague-based court under a bilateral agreement.
Full membership in the group of countries recognizing the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court is one of the conditions for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
