Baltic leaders back Moldova's EU bid on Independence Day

The presidents of the Baltic countries—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—are expected to arrive in Chișinău today, August 27, to participate in events dedicated to Independence Day.

They were invited by the head of state, Maia Sandu.

The visit of the three presidents—Alar Karis of Estonia, Edgars Rinkēvičs of Latvia, and Gitanas Nausėda of Lithuania—highlights the close ties between the Republic of Moldova and the Baltic countries, all of which share a common history of liberation from Soviet rule and a similar path toward European integration.

The three Baltic leaders will sign a joint declaration reaffirming their support for the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union. Additionally, they will deliver a message of congratulations to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

The Baltic leaders were invited by the head of state, Maia Sandu, who announced the day before that she would not participate in the official ceremonies due to testing positive for Covid-19. However, she will deliver a video speech at 21:35 in the Great National Assembly Square.

The three Baltic leaders are also expected at the Moldova 1 studio, where journalist Lucia Vieru will discuss with them how the Baltic countries have advanced on the path of European integration and the importance of their experience for our country's European journey.
