Von der Leyen urges EU to enhance arms production and security
The European Union has not yet done enough to enhance its arms production capabilities in response to geopolitical threats, particularly Russia's war in Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said on Friday, according to Reuters.
"Protecting Europe is Europe's primary duty. While NATO must remain the core of our collective defence, we require a significantly stronger European pillar," von der Leyen stated at the GLOBESEC forum, a security conference held in Prague.
The head of the Commission also remarked that it is illusory to believe that the EU has done enough regarding security at the beginning of this decade, and that the latter half of the decade will be fraught with risks.
"We Europeans must remain vigilant. We need to refocus our attention on security in all our actions and view our Union as an inherently security-focused project," von der Leyen added.
