Ukraine urges Mongolia to arrest Putin under ICC mandate

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the Mongolian authorities to carry out the mandate of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and arrest Vladimir Putin, who is scheduled to visit the country on September 3, according to Meduza.

Kyiv asserts that Putin is "a war criminal" and expresses hope that the Mongolian government, which has ratified the Rome Statute, "acknowledges this."

"The forced displacement of Ukrainian children is just one of the many crimes for which Putin and the rest of the military and political leadership of Russia must be held accountable. These individuals are responsible for waging an aggressive war against Ukraine, committing atrocities against the Ukrainian people, including murder, rape, looting, bombing civilian infrastructure, and genocide," the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a declaration.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kyiv requested the enforcement of an obligatory international arrest warrant and the transfer of Putin to a court in The Hague.

Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Mongolia in September. This will be his first visit to a country that has ratified the Rome Statute since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him. The Kremlin has stated that it is not concerned about Putin's potential arrest, as all aspects of the visit have been "carefully planned."
