US Open shocker: Swiatek falls, Pegula advances

Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, the top seed at the New York tournament, was eliminated by American Jessica Pegula. Swiatek lost the match in two sets, 2-6, 4-6, in a contest lasting an hour and a half.

Pegula, ranked sixth in the world, reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Overcome with emotion, she remarked, "I am overjoyed to have reached the semi finals. Pegula will face Karolina Muchova in the semifinals. The Czech player, in turn, defeated Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. This marks Muchova's second consecutive year reaching this stage of the US Open.

In the other semifinal match, Aryna Sabalenka will face American representative Emma Navarro.
