US Open shocker: Swiatek falls, Pegula advances

Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, the top seed at the New York tournament, was eliminated by American Jessica Pegula. Swiatek lost the match in two sets, 2-6, 4-6, in a contest lasting an hour and a half.

Pegula, ranked sixth in the world, reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Overcome with emotion, she remarked, "I am overjoyed to have reached the semi finals. I believe I played at a high level and served well. I feel I executed my game plan effectively and maintained consistency throughout the match. Overall, I am very pleased with my performance."

Pegula will face Karolina Muchova in the semifinals. The Czech player, in turn, defeated Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. This marks Muchova's second consecutive year reaching this stage of the US Open.

In the other semifinal match, Aryna Sabalenka will face American representative Emma Navarro.
