Moldova and Latvia enhance cooperation on EU legislation

The Republic of Moldova and Latvia are set to enhance their cooperation in aligning national legislation with European standards.

This collaboration was discussed today during a meeting between Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, the Minister of Justice from Chișinău, and Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, the Minister of Justice from Riga, who is visiting Chișinău from September 9-10.

Mihailov-Moraru noted that the focus is on Chapter 23, which addresses four key areas: the judicial system, anti-corruption policies, fundamental rights, and the rights of European Union citizens. The discussions are scheduled for October 15-17. Mihailov-Moraru emphasised the importance of support from the Latvian authorities.

"Support from our development partners is crucial for this pre-accession process to the EU. We greatly appreciate the expertise provided by our colleagues in aligning legislation and facilitating European integration," stated Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Moldova.

Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, the Minister of Justice from Latvia, commended the Republic of Moldova’s progress in its European integration efforts. However, she highlighted that "many important steps" are still needed, particularly in the field of justice.

"We discussed several topics, but I would like to emphasise how crucial it is for every democracy, and especially for the Republic of Moldova, to uphold its principles, particularly democratic principles," added Lībiņa-Egnere.

The assessment of national legislation's compliance with EU standards commenced in February this year. On June 25, the EU officially initiated accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova. The country will negotiate 35 chapters with each EU member state, with judicial reform being one of the key conditions in the accession process.

The authorities in Chișinău have set a goal of achieving EU accession by 2030.
