Mircea Geoana, decorated with the NATO Order "Meritorious Service"

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana was awarded the NATO Order “Meritorious Service” today, in recognition of “exceptional activity in service of the North Atlantic Alliance”. The decoration ceremony took place at the Alliance headquarters in Brussels and was hosted by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

He reviewed the career of Geoana, who was Romania's youngest ambassador to the United States, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position from which he "led the country on the Euro-Atlantic path and helped other nations to do the same". After awarding, Geoana said that it was the privilege of his life to represent his country.

"I know I have made many of you proud by holding this position for five years. I am proud of you, our young people, our diplomats, our soldiers, all those who work for NATO. We are a respected and influential nation in NATO", said Geoana.

Boris Ruge, the assistant secretary general for political affairs and security policy, will serve as interim deputy secretary general until Geoana's successor is appointed.

We remind you that Mircea Geoana resigned from the position of NATO Deputy Secretary General, the main reason for the resignation was his candidacy in the presidential elections.
