Alexandr Stoianoglo launches the election campaign for the position of president of the country

The former general prosecutor Alexandr Stoianoglo has officially launched the electoral campaign for the position of president of the Republic of Moldova. His candidacy was designated and is supported by the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM).

"Justice for all" - is the slogan with which Alexandr Stoianoglo enters the presidential campaign. The main promises made by the socialist-backed candidate are: "the triumph of justice", "economic growth" and a "modern future" for all.

"The fight for justice does not have to end with personal success. A true political struggle can only be a struggle for justice for the majority, a struggle for justice for all. The immediate result of this struggle will be a completely different reputation of our Moldova: a territory of justice, law and knowledge, of civil liberty and social guarantees, of modern business with initiative and of culture full of enthusiasm".

The presidential election will be held on October 20. The electoral campaign started today.

Who is Alexandr Stoianoglo?

Alexandr Stoianoglo was appointed general prosecutor in 2019, but in 2021 he was suspended from his position and later detained, being accused of abuse of power, passive corruption and illicit enrichment. Among the most famous cases is the one related to the release of the controversial businessman Veaceslav Platon.

On September 26, 2023, the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, signed the decree dismissing the suspended general prosecutor.

In October 2023, Stoianoglo was acquitted in one of the cases in which he was accused of abuse of power, and the Republic of Moldova was convicted at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) for violating his procedural rights, having to pay compensation in the amount of 3,600 euros as costs and expenses.

Alexandr Stoianoglo was nominated as a candidate for the presidential elections by the Socialist Party (PSRM) on July 8. On September 2, he was registered by the CEC as a candidate for the head of state.
