Klaus Iohannis, last speech at the UN: Romania firmly supports Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova
The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, gave his last speech before the UN General Assembly, underlining Romania's commitment to support Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova in a complicated regional context. The leader from Cotroceni emphasized the important role of Romania in maintaining security and stability in the region.
"Romania has provided strong and multidimensional support to Ukraine and its people, and we are committed to maintaining it as long as needed," Iohannis said. He pointed out that Russia's war against Ukraine is "the biggest security crisis in recent European history" with serious consequences for the whole world.
The President of Romania pointed to the crucial role his country plays in facilitating grain exports from Ukraine through the Danube and Black Sea ports, thus contributing to global food security.
"A long-term conflict is unacceptable and we must stand firm. Ukraine needs the determined support of all UN member states, that respect international law and the UN Charter. Romania fully supports President Zelenski's Peace Initiative: it is the only approach that can ensure a just and lasting peace and is in full agreement with the UN Charter and international law," Iohannis said in his speech.
Regarding the Republic of Moldova, Iohannis emphasized Romania's unconditional support for strengthening resilience, strongly affected by the regional crisis. "Romania will continue its unconditional support for strengthening the resilience of the Republic of Moldova, the second most affected country by this war", said the leader from Bucharest.
The leader from Cotroceni also spoke about the conflict in the Gaza Strip and called for an end to hostilities, expressing his support for the two-state solution.
This was Iohannis' last participation in the UN General Assembly as President.
