Aurora borealis, visible in the Republic of Moldova: A unique display in the night sky

A rare and spectacular phenomenon could be observed Thursday night in the Republic of Moldova: the aurora borealis, the bright lights known especially in the polar regions, appeared at much lower latitudes than usual. This impressive phenomenon was caused by a G4 geomagnetic storm, produced by a mass of solar particles that hit the Earth's atmosphere. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned about the storm since the beginning of the week, and the predictions have come true.

The aurora borealis is formed when charged particles from the Sun collide with the Earth's atmosphere, creating these "drapes" of light in shades of green, purple and red.

Internet users from the Republic of Moldova managed to capture spectacular aurora images and publish them on social networks. Stunning photos of the sky lit up in vivid colours quickly went viral.

The aurora borealis at low latitudes is an exceptional phenomenon, and its appearance in our region is truly a unique show, provided by the forces of nature. Specialists say that such events are difficult to predict.
