EXCLUSIVE // What do the conclusions of the EU summit that starts today say about the Republic of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine
Before the European Council on Thursday and Friday in Brussels, the "European summit", as it is colloquially called, in the "capital of Europe", the Public Broadcaster"Teleradio Moldova" could consult the provisional text of the Conclusions, drawn up by the advisers of the 27 leaders and which they will adopt, sign and make public on Friday at the end of the summit.
What the conclusions of the EU summit say about Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine
As for the Republic of Moldova, the 27 leaders reaffirm, as the text reads in its current form, "firm support for the Republic of Moldova's accession path and underline the European Union's ongoing assistance to Moldova, to continue its reforms and to -strengthen its resistance and stability".
The European Council then reaffirms its commitment to the Republic of Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity and condemns Russia's persistent attempts to use manipulation and false information to undermine democratic elections and the Moldovan people's choice of a prosperous, stable, and peaceful European future.
Georgia
The European Council then reiterates its concern about Georgia's course of action, which is contrary to the values and principles on which the European Union is founded.
What is it about? Georgia holds parliamentary elections on Sunday, October 20, on the same day as the Republic of Moldova, and the 27 EU leaders expect the Georgian authorities to ensure that the parliamentary elections are free and fair, as the Georgian people have the right to choose your political future.
Last week, the European Parliament voted two politically symbolic resolutions on Chisinau and Tbilisi. In the case of the Republic of Moldova, the MEPs also sent a warning against Russia's constant attempts to derail the European path of the Republic of Moldova through Moscow's electoral interference. Regarding Georgia, MEPs pointed out that the current authoritarian path of the Georgian government calls into question Georgia's EU integration. Zelensky comes to Brussels
Ukraine
the President of the European Council, Charles Michel wrote on Twitter that he invited Volodymyr Zelenskiy to present his "plan for victory" in person today and tomorrow in Brussels, during the EU summit. (Zelenski was originally scheduled to brief leaders via video conference, but is now expected to appear in person.) The text of the "Conclusions" says, "The European Council calls for the rapid intensification of military support and the acceleration of its delivery, especially the systems of air defense, munitions and missiles that are urgently needed to protect the population of Ukraine".
European leaders continue to support the idea of using interest from frozen Russian funds to support Ukraine's war effort. It also calls for the G7 to honor its commitment to provide around 45 billion euros in support to Ukraine by the end of the year. Relatively consensual conclusions, therefore, as if the leaders would rather wait for the Hungarian EU presidency under Viktor Orbán to end, the more so as it will be followed by the Polish presidency under the pro-European and anti-Putin Donald Tusk... a former president, by the way, of the European Council.
