Fake messages about the presidential election and referendum, received by citizens. Details of the authorities

The Information Technology and Cyber Security Service (STISC) of the Republic of Moldova announces a new form of disinformation. Several citizens have received suspicious messages on WhatsApp and other platforms, which seek to manipulate public opinion regarding the October 20 referendum and elections.

According to STISC, some messages are from Indonesia but are directly aimed at Moldovan citizens. In this context, the authorities recommend blocking senders and reporting messages as spam, emphasizing the need not to share this information. "*These messages try to manipulate public opinion about the referendum and the election. What can we do? block the sender; report the message as spam or abusive; DO NOT share such messages," reads the statement.

We remind you that this is not the only online fake news in the Republic of Moldova. Over the past two weeks, several fake messages and letters purporting to be official documents issued by several state institutions were shared on social media. The spokesperson of the Government, Daniel Vodă, said that the fake news have only one goal: to cause confusion among the citizens.
