Moldova secures winter gas supply amid Ukraine war

Romania has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Republic of Moldova's energy security, particularly with the approach of winter.

Authorities in Bucharest have expressed their willingness to provide Moldova with gas from Romanian reserves, should the need arise. However, Moldova has already established both emergency and supplementary gas reserves across the Prut River. Energocom, the state-owned energy company, has stockpiled significant quantities of gas in Romanian storage facilities, sufficient to cover Moldova's energy needs for an extended period.

"These reserves include both an emergency supply and an additional stock that can be utilised," stated Sebastian Burduja, Romania's Minister of Energy. "I believe this is sufficient for a significant period, including throughout the winter. Moreover, beyond current reserves, Romania is prepared to share its existing stockpiles and winter production to support the Republic of Moldova. As your brothers across the Prut, we will always stand with you."

According to Victor Bînzari, interim General Director of Energocom, approximately 50 million cubic metres of gas are currently stored in Romania.

"Energocom was designated to manage these stockpiles," explained Bînzari. "Given the ongoing uncertainty of the situation in Ukraine, the Board of Directors decided to store the gas in Romania, where we have amassed approximately 50 million cubic metres. This gas will be supplied to Moldovan gas companies this winter to ensure an adequate supply for citizens."

A government resolution approved this past spring mandates that Moldova maintain gas reserves equivalent to roughly 15% of its average annual consumption. Of this, over 30% must be designated as security stocks to ensure the country's natural gas supply in case of emergencies. Energocom is responsible for managing these security stocks.

The total amount of natural gas required for storage is over 149 million cubic metres. Approximately 47 million cubic metres are designated as security stock, enough for 10 days of winter consumption. Currently, almost half of this security stock is stored in Ukraine.
