Czech Ambassador: The future of the Republic of Moldova depends on the choice and responsibility of the citizens

The results of the constitutional republican referendum on October 20 will not have a major impact on the development of the Republic of Moldova, but the inclusion of certain chapters in the Constitution is a positive step for the European path of the Republic of Moldova. Statements to this effect were made by the Czech ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Jaromír Plíšek, in the show "Diplomatic Dimension" on Moldova 1 TV. However, the diplomat believes that the constant direction towards the European Union will largely depend on the dedication and capacity of the future managements to support this path.

"This referendum result was influenced by misinformation, because as far as I know the preference for the European vector was always much more than 50 percent as the referendum turned out. The result obtained by the referendum will not greatly influence future developments. In fact, some chapters were included in the Constitution, it is very good for the Republic of Moldova, for this European approach. In my opinion, much more important will be the dedication and capacity of the Presidency, Government and Parliament, to step towards this road, towards Europe", said the official.

According to the diplomat, now the future of the country "depends on the choice of the citizens and their responsibility in deciding what kind of leadership they want for the Republic of Moldova".

The Czech ambassador to the Republic of Moldova also referred to the disinformation attempts, which intensified during this period. The official noted that they aim to induce fear and create a negative image of the European Union in society. He rejected claims that joining the European Union would require giving up national values, the traditional family or selling land.

"I can say with all responsibility that this information shared between citizens and voters is intended to scare people about Europe and produce a bad image. It's fake information, it's lies. No one forced us to sell our land or give up our traditional family. When we became members of the EU, a very large space was opened for us in a civilized, developed world, based on principles and respect", said the diplomat.

Jaromír Plíšek said in the show that, in his mandate as ambassador, a priority is to "facilitate the transfer of experience of the Czech Republic in the process of adapting the country to the standards of the European Union". According to him, the continuation of development assistance is an essential component of the bilateral relations between the two countries.

"The general priority for me is to facilitate the transfer of the country's experience with the process of adaptation to EU standards, obviously, if the Moldovan side shows interest. Except this assistance for development which is an integral part of our relations, there is the development of commercial relations and not least the political ones which in the current phase are very intense", the ambassador said.

Moreover, the diplomat pointed that over the years the Czech Republic has offered the Republic of Moldova assistance in several fields such as public administration, agriculture and the social field, and during the last two years the field of defense and security were a priority. In the context, Jaromír Plíšek announced that currently, a series of projects worth a total of 15 million euros are underway, almost half of which are intended for security.
